Today, a precious little child was conceived. She was conceived amidst fighting and struggling and pain. She was conceived on the sweats and tears of strong men and women. Ghana was conceived today. Ghana was freed today. Ghana was liberated today. Y’all today is Ghana’s Independence Day. Ghana is 64 today and we are celebrating.
And no, we are not going to look down on the many, numerous issues that need to be addressed. We are not side lining the gazillion gender inequality issues plaquing our country, we won’t forget how there seem to never be a fair election ever, we are not keeping silent on the sudden rise of LGBTQI+ rights in the country, we are not turning blind eye to the plentiful political backbite raiding almost every sector of the country, we are not mumming on the lackadaisical approaches to our educational system (double track, free shs, free feeding and all) and job employments.
It’s Ghana’s Independence Day after all. Today we leave all the issues behind and celebrate Ghana’s Independence and welcome another year full of promised hope and prosperity. Another year to resist oppressor’s rule with all our will and might. Another year to defend the cause of freedom and of right. Another year to fill our breast with true humility, honesty, fearlessness.
We will don our treasured fugu, kente, ntoma, dashikis, agbada with beads. We will march onwards saluting all the borgas and chairman. We will take to the streets and dance azonto, shuperu, among others. We will fill our hearts with hope and wait for tomorrow; it’s Ghana’s Independence Day after all.
